Entering into God’s heart.

I’ll never forget the day when I was driving from a meeting that the band and I had with Pastor Crow on my way to Tylers house for band practice. During the meeting Pastor Crow was sharing with us how much of a burden he has for the lost and how it drives him crazy to know there is people out there not hearing the word of God when were just sitting here talking about telling them. It made me think a lot. We sure do talk about it a lot…but thats all we do. Just talk, we don’t put anything into action or develop any kind of plan to save them. Its kind of ridiculous to think about.

Anyways, I was driving on Bradley road by myself and I was just thinking about all those broken and desperate people and I asked God to give me a heart like his and have a burning passion for those people. …Like I said before, be careful what you ask God for! I remember becoming overwhelmed with this feeling of comforting uncomfort. I took a left on to Royal Woods street and just parked my car and sat there in tears. I had never felt such a burden for those people as I had then. It was something I will never forget.

It seems as if the closer I come to God’s heart that the more and more I want to do something for lost people. They are very closely linked. Isn’t that what God wants?! Isn’t that what the great commission is? To go into the world and save the lost? If its Gods heart for us to save the lost, how come so many of us go on one missions trip a year and count that as our yearly “doing something for God.” Now, I am by no means bashing missions trips, I absolutely love them and the one I went on to New Orleans was incredible, all I’m saying is that God wants us to do more then missions trips.

After pondering this whole thing for a few months God has really showed me what it means to help the lost and how we can truly fufill the great commission to our best ability without having to go across the world. That is what I want to share with you beautiful people now. :)

The Great Commission

- On studying the Great Commission it opened up a whole new meaning to me. Basically, our bibles today say, ”Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…ect” (Matthew 28:18). So we put this huge emphasison the word “Go” and we think that in order to fufill the Great Commission we need to “go” somewhere around the world and preach the word of God to the ones who have never heard. Usually, this is the response I get when I ask people what the Great Commission means to them.

However,  while reading in the Greek, we find that were not being commanded to “go” into the world. The Greek word for “go” is an aorist participle, meaning “as you go”, which is translated into “While going, make disciples of all the nations…ect.” This puts a whole new meaning to what the Great Commission is! This means that we don’t need to go somewhere to help someone instead, we help someone while we are going to that somewhere.

I started to think then, “In what kind of ways can I start to help people not across the world?” I couldn’t think of how God wants us to help the lost and to make disciples of all the nations. I knew he wanted me to I just couldn’t figure out how to put that into action. Lately, through revelation of God I have started to find just exactly what God wants us to do daily to fulfill the commandment of “While going, make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you.”

Who are lost people?

In reality, we all are kind of lost in one way or another. So in my opinion, I think that this command Jesus gave us is for us! Not just those people in China who have no clue who Jesus is. I am called to go to my christian friend and help him in any way I can and disciple him as best as I can and just love on the dude! Thats what I believe the Great Commission is. To help one another in any way that we can. Doesn’t matter if we are in New Orleans helping with Katrina victims or sitting in our front yard talking to our neighbor. We are called by God to help that person. Heres why I believe that and what I believe we can do to save the lost.

1. Colossians 4:4-6 “Pray that I may proclaim it clearly, as I should. Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity. Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.”

2 Timothy 4:2 “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.”

- What I get out of these two verses is that God wants us to pray that he helps us to communicate to others clearly and to always be ready in every season to talk to people and to be able to answer any questions that anyone may have. Why would we always have to be ready to answer someones questions or to talk to them? Obviously Paul expects that we as Christians would help other fellow Christians and unbelievers by having conversation with them.

2. 2 Corinthians 1:3-6 ”Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.

- Here God tells us to use that comfort he gives us to comfort other people. This is one of my favorite passages in the bible because it tells us that we should be other peoples comfort. How many times do you just need a hug? How many times do you just need that one person to give you a word of encouragement? How many times are YOU the one going up to that one person and letting them know that you love them and that your praying for them? I know that for me I don’t do it nearly as much as I could.

I believe more then anything that we are called to help the lost by being wise in our knowledge of Christ so that we can help others. I believe that we also can help others by simply being an encourager, comforter, friend, a trust worthy person, a friendly smile, a hug and so much more! We don’t need to constantly be traveling around the world to save the lost. We just need to open our eyes to whats around us and use the love that God gives us to love on others. Isn’t that what God is all about?! Love! He loves us and we should display that love through loving someone else. The thing I’m learning about God is that everything is connected…especially love. Colossians3:14 says, “And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Its so true!

I want to encourage you to ask God to show you his heart. Ask him to put in you a passion for the lost people and then do something about it! Don’t just talk about going on a missions trip or having that conversation with that friend. Go do it!

  2. Hey Matt,

You are really growing in Christ. I got a challenge for you…How about every time you walk out the door you are an evangelist and missionary. It is great to help out our brothers and sisters but to really allow Christ to live through us we have to learn to love the unlovable…wow, crazy stuff…I remember back when I was working the afternoon shift and would be on public square every weeknight at midnight. I was talking to this homeless guy and sensed that he was really suffering. He wore raged clothes and was filthy. He professed a belief in Christ so I asked if we could pray and he agreed. As I began to pray for him I put my arm around his shoulder and as I continued to pray the tears began to flow. This guy hadn’t been hugged in years. Matt, you are an ambassador of Jesus Christ cleverly disguised as a school student. You are right, Matt, the greatest is love and there are so many hurting souls out there. Be attuned to the Holy Spirit wherever you go and be willing to be used by God and he will put people in your path and let you know that He needs you to take care of this person. Next time you are at a restaurant ask your server if they need prayer. We all need to be looking for any opportunity to do His bidding when we are out in the world. Your blog is great and a testimony to what God is doing in your life and I continue to be very proud of you.
