What’s your pattern? (Genesis Study #1)

I’ve recently been studying the book of Genesis. Starting from the very beginning and really trying to figure out how sin came to be and what God had in mind for us as a people in the first place. Through my studying, I have discovered new revelations as well as hard questions. I will be posting more blogs shortly, but in the meantime I wanted to share this quote I came across in my studying and get your opinions.

“The history of every temptation, and of every sin, is the same; the outward object of attraction, the inward commotion of mind, the increase and triumph of passionate desire; ending in the degradation, slavery, and ruin of the soul.”

Unfortunately, I would have to say this statement is extremely accurate when it comes to the process between temptation and sin:
Attraction>Thought>Desire>Act>Slavery to sin

Pattern of Sin:
Attraction: You see a person/thing/opportunity/feeling/thrill that looks appealing.
Thought: It’s all you think about and it consumes your mind.
Desire: You see yourself desiring and wanting what your attracted to so much so that it becomes your main passion/focus.
Act: You act on your attraction, thoughts and desires resulting in disobedience.
Slavery to sin: You choose to obey your flesh rather than your spirit and let sin control you in choices and in guilt.

If we take a look at Genesis 3:6-9 and read the story of “The fall.” We see that this pattern is dead on.
“When the woman saw(Attraction) that the fruit of the tree was good(Thought) for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom(Desire), she took some and ate it(Act). She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked(Slavery to sin); so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.”

(If you keep reading you see that God lays out a punishment to the serpent, Eve and Adam for that they did which resulted in literal “slavery to sin” from birth. Gen 3:14-19)

Why is it that we as Christ followers follow a pattern of sin made by Adam and Eve rather than a pattern of freedom made by God? What’s crazy about this pattern is that we go through it in a matter of seconds and sometimes in years. It could be making one bad decision with friends in a split second to a pornography addiction that results in an affair 20 years later.

It’s insane what sin can do to you and how this pattern seems to be consistent through your life making small sins become big sins. What do you think? Is this pattern true biblically and in your own life? What do you think Jesus’ pattern looks like? Is it different for everyone, the same, changing with culture? And the hardest question of all, which pattern are you following?

Great word Matt. I think one of the keys to success in destroying sin in ones life is to not simply rely on God given strength but to do what Socrates said “Know thyself”. If you don’t identify your patterns and areas of weakness you’ll end up putting yourself into federate situations.
